Greenville, S.C. – Rachel Rasins scored twice and added one assist as the Wofford Terriers earned a 3-2 victory over the Furman Paladins in SoCon women's soccer action Friday evening from Stone Stadium.
Furman drops to 4-3-1 on the season and 0-1 in conference play, while Wofford improves to 3-7 overall and 1-0 in the league.
Following a game-tying goal by the Paladins'
Isabella Gutierrez, Rasins netted the winning goal for the Terriers in the 77
th minute. Rasins received a pass from Katie Sanger at the top of the 18-yard box with the ball deflecting off her feet. She gained possession after the ball landed and beat a Paladin defender. Her attempt from 19 yards away went past Furman goalkeeper
Nora Sampson inside the left post.
The Paladins got the scoring started in the 14
th minute when
Julia Nicholas recorded her first goal of the season off the assist from Gutierrez. Gutierrez received a pass from
Grace Baghdady in the middle of Wofford's side of the field and dribbled inside the 18-yard box near side. She made a pass near the touchline back to the middle where Nicholas stepped in front of a Terrier defender and scored on the one-timer from six yards. Gutierrez collected her third assist of the season.
Caileen Almeida evened the score for Wofford at 1-1 shortly thereafter in the 18
th minute with Rasins getting credit for the assist. Rasins made a pass from the near side of the 18-yard box back to the middle where Almeida scored from 15 yards out.
Rasins' first goal of the contest put the Terriers in front 2-1 during the 40
th minute. She gained possession at the corner of the 18-yard box far side from Katie Gilligan and beat one Furman defender with a spin move. Her attempt from 20 yards away deflected off the hands of Paladin goalkeeper
Addison Corn and into the left side of the net.
Furman tied the game again in the 60
th minute on Gutierrez's first goal of the season, coming off a penalty kick. The Paladins were awarded the penalty attempt after
Jasmine Greene was fouled by a Wofford defender just inside the 18-yard box.
Gutierrez and Greene combined for 17 shots in the contest with Gutierrez leading all players with nine and Greene contributing eight. Sampson finished with four saves and Corn three.
Rasins attempted a team-leading five shots for the Terriers with four going on goal. Maria Mon registered 11 saves in goal.
Furman concluded the game leading 27-16 in shots and 13-10 in attempts on goal. The Paladins also held an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Furman remains at home next weekend to host Western Carolina (October 1) and East Tennessee State (October 3) in a pair of SoCon matchups.
