Raine, Garzon Lead Furman to 2-1 Victory over Belmont

Paladins Pick up First SoCon Win of the Season

Greenville, S.C. – Jake Raine and Jacob Garzon netted goals on Saturday evening to lead the Furman men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over the Belmont Bruins in SoCon action from Stone Stadium.

Furman improves to 2-5 on the season and 1-1 in league play, while Belmont drops to 4-3-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

The duo of Raine and Garzon led the Paladins with one goal each while Conor Dowler added an assist. Raine recorded his team-leading third goal of the season and Garzon collected his second. Dowler dished out his first assist of the year.

Raine put Furman on the board first in the 26th minute scoring on a penalty kick. The Paladins received the penalty attempt after Raine was fouled by Bruin goalkeeper Drew Romig inside the 18-yard box following a cross near side from Josh Hosie.

Garzon extended the Paladins lead to 2-0 in the 58th minute off the assist from Dowler. Dowler got the play started with his cross in front of the Furman bench over to Callum Holland at the far side of the 18-yard box. Holland dribbled inside the 18 and made a pass back to the near post where Dowler kept the ball from going out of bounds with a pass back to the middle of the box. The pass found an open Garzon who scored from eight yards away.

Niccolo Dagnoni cut the Paladins' lead to 2-1 when play reached the 71st minute on a penalty kick.

Garzon led Furman offensively with three shots including two on goal. Raine, Dowler and Miles Fenton each contributed two shots. Ben Roberts finished with one save in goal.

John Bannec, AJ Chastonay and Michael Saunders attempted a team-high two shots apiece for Belmont. Romig registered two saves.

The Paladins held a 12-10 advantage in shots and 4-3 in attempts on goal. Both teams took two corner kicks.

Furman steps back into non-conference play on Wednesday, September 29 traveling to Charleston, S.C. for a 6 p.m. kickoff at College of Charleston.
