GREENVILLE, S.C. - Leah Daniel hit .467 with 14 kills to lead the Elon volleyball team past Furman, 25-17, 25-16, 25-16, Saturday night at Alley Gymnasium in Greenville, S.C.
The Paladins drop to 3-2 overall with the loss, while Elon improves to 3-3 .Â
Junior Natalie Dunn hit .304 with nine kills to pace Furman, and junior Sarah Turner posted 17 assists and seven digs. Junior Andrea Aceveda notched a team-high 15 digs, and sophomore Ella Abraham added 12 assists.Â
Haylie Clark posted 37 assists for the Phoenix, and Jordan Gower tallied 17 digs. Kellyn Trowse posted 13 digs, and Sydney Love added 12 kills for Elon.Â
In the opening set, the teams were tied at 14-all when Elon reeled off five-straight to take a 19-15 advantage. After the Phoenix built a 21-15 lead, the Paladins scored off a kill by senior Neci Harris and an Elon attack error to pull within four, but the Phoenix scored the final four points for the 25-17 set victory.
Elon took a quick 11-2 lead in set two then led 13-4, but Furman surged back, taking eight of the next 10 points to slice the deficit to 15-12. Dunn scored three kills in the rally, while freshman Bella Tolone added two kills. Tolone added two additional kills to keep the Paladins in the match at 17-14, before Elon won eight of the final 10 points to take set two, 25-16.Â
The Phoenix built a 9-3 lead in set three before Furman scored three-straight off a kill by Dunn and two Elon attack errors to pull within three points. Following an Elon timeout, the Phoenix scored three-consecutive points, taking a 12-6 margin. The teams traded scores back and forth with a Paladin kill from sophomore Mikaela Schultz and two from Dunn to settle with Elon up, 17-11. The Phoenix won three-straight to push the advantage to 20-11, but the Paladins claimed five of the next seven points with key back-to-back service aces by Turner to stay in the match, 22-16, and force an Elon timeout. Following the timeout, the Phoenix won the final three points to take the set, 25-16.Â
The Paladins will travel to the Dolphin Classic in Jacksonville, Fla., next weekend. Furman will square off against host Jacksonville Friday at 10 a.m. before facing South Florida Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. The Paladins will conclude the tournament with a contest versus Long Island Saturday at 11 a.m.
