Wofford Holds Off Furman, 74-69

Terriers Now 1-29 Versus Paladins In Greenville

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Niyah Lutz scored a game high 25 points and Wofford held off a furious Furman second half rally to claim a 74-69 victory in Southern Conference women's basketball action on Thursday evening at Timmons Arena.

The win was the first for Wofford (7-9, 2-0 SoCon ) against Furman (8-8, 1-1 SoCon) in Greenville in 30 games.

Lutz drained 10-of-19 shots, including 5-of-8 3-pointers, for her 25 points.

Tierra Hodges led Furman with 24 points and notched her 10th double-double of the season with 12 rebounds.

Both teams were forced to contend without leading players as Wofford senior guard Jackie Carman (12.3 ppg) and Furman sophomore guard Tate Walters (13.3 ppg, 5.1 rpg, 50 assists) were not in the arena.

After Furman raced to a 21-12 lead after one quarter, Lutz sparked a blistering second quarter for the Terriers by draining back-to-back 3-pointers to pull the Terriers to within 21-18.

The Paladins answered with a 7-0 run to go up 28-18 following a Sydney James jump shot, but Wofford bounced back with a 20-4 scoring spree, taking its first lead of the contest, 31-30, on a Lutz 3-point with 3:53 remaining en route to a posting 38-32 halftime advantage.

The Terriers appeared set to cruise after stretching their lead to 57-39 with four minutes to go in the third quarter.  A 19-4 Furman rally, however, got the Paladins back to within three at 61-58 following a Hodges jumper at the 7:34 mark.

The Paladins cut it to 68-66 on another Hodges basket with 2:57 to go, part of her 11-point fourth quarter, but that was a close as Furman would get.

Reagan Rapert scored 17 points, Annabelle Shultz added 14, and Lilly Hatton rounded out Wofford's double figure scorers with 10 points.

Grace van Rij and Sydney James joined Hodges in double figures for Furman with 14 points apiece.

The Terriers shot 45.2 percent for the game, including a combined 18-of-31 (.580)  over the second and third quarters to help them take the lead.  Wofford's shooting effort included 9-of-23 work from 3-point range.

Furman finished at 41.4 percent (29x70), converting just 5-of-25 treys.

The Paladins claimed a 44-35 rebounding advantage, led by Hodges' game high 12 caroms.
