BIRMINGHAM, ALA. -- Andrea Cournoyer scored 26 of her game high 29 points in the second half to propel host Samford past Furman, 90-81, in Southern Conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Pete Hanna Center.
Cournoyer connected on 8-of-9 shots, including both 3-pointers, and was a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line over the game's final 20 minutes as Samford (8-11, 3-2 SoCon) rallied from a 54-48 late third quarter deficit to collect the victory.
Cournoyer scored the first seven points of the fourth period to highlight a 15-0 Bulldog run that staked Samford to a 71-60 lead following a pair of Sanaa Redmond free throws three minutes into the frame.
Furman managed to get within 78-74 on a
Tate Walters 3-pointer, but the Paladins couldn't counter Cournoyer and Samford's accurate shooting, as the Bulldogs made 15-of-25 shots from the field, including 5-of-10 from 3-point range, and all 20 free throw opportunities over the game's final 20 minutes. Â The Bulldogs, who entered the contest shooting 67.6 percent from the free throw line, made 28-of-30 at the charity stripe (93.3 percent).
The game was a whistle-fest from the start with 50 fouls called.
Natalie Armstrong followed Cournoyer with 15 points as the Bulldogs put five players in double figures.
Sydney James paced Furman with 21 points, and
Tierra Hodges finished with 18 points and a game high seven rebounds to become the Paladins' all-time leading rebounder. Â The 5-foot-9 Paladin senior moved ahead of Natalie Cleckley (1987-90) on Furman's career ledger, now with 1,108 caroms.
Tate Walters managed 15 points but was in foul trouble from the start, registering only 22 minutes of court time.
Grace van Rij contributed 12 points for the Paladins.
Samford finished the contest shooting 52.9 percent (27x51), including 8-of-15 from 3-point range.
Furman hit on 28-of-59 shots (47.5 percent).
