Greensboro, N.C. – UNC Greensboro scored three goals in a span of less than 15 minutes during the first half en route to a 3-0 Southern Conference women's soccer victory over Furman on Friday evening at UNCG Stadium Greensboro, N.C.
The Spartans' Gabi Santora opened the scoring with a little luck in the 21
st minute as her left-footed strike from outside of the box deflected off a Paladin defender and looped into the right-hand corner. Just 88 seconds later, the ball bounced UNCG's direction once again. Parker Sikora played a ball from the left side of the box that caromed off a Furman defender and into the path of Nadia Wilson at the far post for an uncontested tap-in to double the Spartan lead.
Maddy Gilhool added the UNCG offensive explosion at the 35:51 mark. Morgan Brubaker beat her defender on the right wing and sent a low cross into the center of the box that Gilhool settled before firing a right-footed strike into the near corner.
"The ball certainly didn't bounce our way tonight against a tough UNCG team, but we have to do a better job of handling adversity and not letting a bit of bad luck turn into a three-goal deficit," said Paladin head coach
Andrew Burr. "We'll begin to focus on Sunday and look to rebound at VMI."
UNCG (6-7-2, 2-3-1 SoCon) posted a 19-8 margin in total shots and a 7-2 edge in shots on goal. Emma Malone recorded the shutout after saving two shots for the Spartans.
Nora Sampson took the loss after stopping two shots in 45 minutes of action, while
Addison Corn also notched two saves for the Paladins.
Furman (7-7-1, 2-3-1 SoCon) plays its final road match of the regular season Sunday afternoon when it travels to Lexington, Va., to face VMI. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. The Paladins close out the regular season next weekend with home matches versus Samford and Chattanooga.
