WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Furman women's tennis team concluded play Sunday at the ITA Carolinas Regional Championships at the Wake Forest Tennis Center in Winston-Salem, N.C. The tournament showcased the top women's tennis players from the states of North Carolina and South Carolina.
Two Paladins reached the round of eight in the main singles draw. Sophomore Jess Dawson defeated Duke's Katie Codd, 6-4, 6-3, in the first round then beat Madison Schwarz of Western Carolina, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, to reach the round of eight. Sophomore Ellie Schulson recorded victories over Elon's Sibel Tanik (6-0, 6-0) and Nell Miller of N.C. State (6-4, 0-6, 6-1), to advance to the round of eight.
Sophomore Sara Snyder topped Clemson's Daniella Medvedeva, 6-1, 2-6, 6-3, in the first round, and sophomore Marissa Pennings scored a first-round victory over Lily Woods of Wofford, 6-4, 6-4.
In the consolation singles draw, freshman Luca Vocke scored two wins to reach the semifinals. She posted a 6-4, 7-6(3) victory versus Whitley Pate of Wake Forest then beat Appalachian State's Maggie Pate, 6-4, 6-0.
Pennings, Snyder, Schulson, and Vocke all advanced out of the qualifying draw to reach the main draw.
Snyder and Dawson won the doubles consolation draw. The duo beat Jesse Hollins and Lilie Steryous of Coastal Carolina, 8-2, in the round of 16, then defeated College of Charleston's Slade Coetzee and Halli Trinkle, 8-1, in the quarterfinals. Furman defeated Presbyterian's Claudia Sanchez Quesada and Lucianna Piedra, 8-3, in the semifinals then won by walkover versus Campbell's Kopecka and Ristola in the finals.
Vocke and Shulson combined for an 8-5 win over College of Charleston's Elle Bredemann and Maja Jekauc in the main draw's round of 32, while Pennings and Griffith scored an 8-6 victory versus Cambell's Anna Kopecka and Eeva Ristola, also in the round of 32.
Furman will compete at the Southern Conference Fall Championship, Nov. 4-6, in Belton, S.C.
