ETSU Downs Furman on Friday

Haynes Pours in Nine Kills, Eight Digs for the Paladins

Greenville, S.C. – Amanda Lowe had a match high 11 kills to lead the East Tennessee State Buccaneers to a 3-0 (21-25, 22-25, 22-25) sweep of the Furman volleyball team in Southern Conference action, Friday evening inside Alley Gymnasium.

Furman drops to 5-15 on the season and 1-9 in SoCon play. With the win, East Tennessee State improves to 14-7 overall and 8-1 in the conference.

Lauren Haynes paced the Paladins offensively with nine kills and added eight digs. Mary Beth Headley provided eight kills and 11 digs while Sydney Tanner totaled six kills. Sarah Turner dished out 16 assists and Ella Abraham provided 15. Defensively, Andrea Aceveda led the team with 16 digs.

Lowe led all players with her 11 kills for the Buccaneers while Kimani Johnson turned in eight and Lundyn Coffman seven. Caroline Dykes finished with a double-double of 29 assists and 12 digs. Haley Sanders recorded a match high 17 digs.

ETSU opened the first set on an 11-4 run, leading to a Furman timeout. The Paladins came out of the timeout and responded with an 11-6 run of their own and cut the deficit down to 17-15 following a Buccaneer attack error. East Tennessee State managed to push its lead back to five, 22-17, only to see Furman make a late charge and trail 22-20 late on Turner's service ace. ETSU scored three of the last four points to win 25-21.

The second set featured eight ties and six lead changes with the Paladins holding an early 7-6 lead after back-to-back Buccaneer attack errors. Haynes later registered a kill and service ace to increase Furman's lead out to 11-8. East Tennessee State answered with a 7-2 run and forced the Paladins into a timeout after going in front 15-13. Furman came back with four consecutive points to take a 17-15 lead capped when Haynes and Kelsey Watkins combined for a block. Grainne McGrath would give the Paladins a 20-19 lead late when she connected on a kill. ETSU then went on to record five straight points and held on for the 25-22 victory.

The third set also saw the score tied eight times as the Buccaneers began on a 4-1 run and held an early 7-3 lead. Furman fought back with a 6-2 run and evened the score at 9-9 when Tanner and Watkins teamed up for a block. The score would be tied four times over the next 13 points with the last coming at 15-15 on a kill from Watkins. ETSU later held a 20-17 advantage but, following a timeout, the Paladins recorded three straight points off a kill from Tanner and a combination block by McGrath and Morgan Cobb. A Buccaneer attack error tied the score at 20-20. East Tennessee State outscored Furman 5-2 after that for the 25-22 set win and 3-0 match victory.

The Paladins concluded the match with eight total blocks led by three apiece from McGrath, Headley, and Watkins.

Furman is back in action on Saturday evening when it hosts Chattanooga on Senior Night at 7 p.m. The Paladins will honor Aceveda, Turner, Watkins and Natalie Dunn prior to the match.
