Sam Miller scored on a free kick in the 53
rd minute to lift Furman to a 2-1 victory over VMI in the regular season finale for both teams on senior night Saturday evening at Stone Soccer Stadium.
With the victory, Furman (6-6-4, 1-3-1 SoCon) secured the No. 5 seed for the Southern Conference Men's Soccer Championship and will face No. 4 seed Wofford in opening round play on Friday, November 4, at UNCG Stadium in Greensboro, N.C. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. VMI finishes the regular season at 2-13-1 overall and 0-5 in the league. The sixth-seeded Keydets will take on Mercer on Friday in Johnson City, Tenn.

With the match knotted at 1-1, Furman earned a free kick on the right wing almost seven minutes into the second half. Miller, a native of Houston, Texas, curled a left-footed kick that bounced through traffic in the box and into the right-hand corner at the 52:02 mark to give the Paladins a 2-1 lead. The set piece marked the second goal of the year for Miller.
Senior goalkeeper
Ben Roberts, who notched one save, and the Furman defense held for the final 37 minutes to help the Paladins secure the victory.
Furman grabbed a first half lead in the 23
rd minute when
Alfredo Diaz-Santillan raced down the left side and curled a ball to the feet of
Dylan Lane at the top of the six-yard box. Lane back-heeled a pass to
Callum Allison who redirected the ball into the back of the net at 22:14 for his first career goal.
VMI evened the match at 1-1 in the 34
th minute when Grant Martin charged at Roberts and deflected the goalkeeper's clearance into the back of the net.
The Paladins posted a 10-8 advantage in total shots and 5-2 margin in shots on goal. Gabe Calhoun recorded three saves in goal for the Keydets.
