The Citadel Hands Furman Women's Soccer Its First SoCon Defeat, 2-0

Paladins Host Mercer On Sunday At 2 P.M.

Greenville, S.C. – Suzuka Yosue tallied a goal and an assist to help The Citadel to a 2-0 victory over Furman in Southern Conference women's soccer action Thursday evening in the Cancer Awareness Match on Seagraves Field on Stone Stadium.

Yosue's cross from the left wing set up Jimena Risoto for the opening goal at the 23:48 mark. Risoto received the pass and poked a shot under goalkeeper Nora Sampson that trickled across the goal line for her third score of the year.

In the 85th minute, Suzuka found space down the left side and dribbled by a defender before depositing her shot for her fourth tally of the campaign at 84:02 to up The Citadel lead to 2-0.

"This was a tough loss tonight against a Citadel team that is playing really well," said Paladin head coach Andrew Burr. "More important than winning or losing a game though is winning the battle against cancer. We are so thankful for the families that gave generously and for everyone who came out to support the Cancer Awareness Match."

During the halftime break, a bench at Stone Stadium was dedicated to the memory or Lorelei Goila, the mother of Furman sophomore Ashlyn Goila, who lost her battle with cancer a year ago. The Paladins wore pink jerseys that were auctioned off with the winners announced following the match.

Furman created several dangerous chances in the first half and twice hit the right post, but the Paladins were unable to best Citadel goalkeeper Brie Sikes. She finished with four saves for the Bulldogs, while Furman's Nora Sampson stopped nine shots in the loss.

The Citadel (7-5-0, 2-2 SoCon) managed a 14-9 edge in shots and an 11-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Bulldogs weather six Furman corner kicks and earned two of their own.

Furman (7-5-1, 2-1-1 SoCon) continues its homestand on Sunday at 2 p.m. when it hosts the Mercer Bears. The contest will be streamed live on ESPN+ with live statistics provided through StatBroadcast at FurmanPaladins.com.
