GREENVILLE, S.C. — Furman converted a pair of early third quarter turnovers into two
Dominic Roberto touchdown runs to take command on the way to a 21-10 victory over The Citadel at Johnson Hagood Stadium on Saturday.
The win is the 62nd for Furman (4-2, 2-1 SoCon) in its 102-game rivalry with The Citadel (1-4, 1-2 SoCon).
Leading 7-3 early in the third quarter, Furman's
Travis Blackshear forced a fumble, which teammate
Bryce Stanfield recovered at the Bulldogs' 32-yard line. Two plays later Roberto blasted off left tackle for 26 yards to the end zone to put the Paladins up, 14-3, following the extra point.
On the ensuing possession, the Paladins'
Jalen Miller jarred the football loose from Citadel wide receiver Cooper Wallace at the Bulldogs' 27, and it was scooped up by
Kam Brinson, who returned it to the 19-yard line. Two plays later Roberto hammered off left guard and carried two Bulldog defenders into the end zone on a 5-yard TD run for a 21-10 lead with 9:20 remaining.
Roberto ran 18 times for 133 yards and the two touchdowns to headline Furman's offense, which mustered just 280 total yards in the contest.
The Citadel finished with 276 yards, its lone touchdown drive coming late in the second quarter. The Bulldogs had a difficult time against a Furman defense headed up by linebacker Bradon Gilby's game high 12 tackles, three of which went for lost yardage, including a sack. The Paladins recorded nine tackles behind the line of scrimmage.
