GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Quarterback
Tyler Huff threw two touchdowns and rushed for two more to lead Furman to its sixth consecutive victory with a 63-28 triumph over Wofford in the regular season finale for both schools Saturday afternoon at Paladin Stadium.
The Paladins (9-2, 7-1 SoCon), who posted 469 yards of total offense, clinched their first nine-win season since 2005 and their first seven-win SoCon campaign since 2001. Furman will learn its postseason opponent on Sunday on the NCAA Division I Football Selection Show, scheduled to air on ESPNU at 12:30 p.m. ET.
After the first three possessions of the game resulted in touchdowns, giving Wofford a 14-7 lead,
Dominic Roberto rumbled for two scores to put Furman in front 21-14 after one quarter.
Huff connected with senior
Ryan Miller on a 10-yard touchdown pass before hooking up with
Joshua Harris on an 18-yard strike to up the lead to 35-14 with 8:20 left in the half. A three-yard touchdown run by Huff extended the advantage to 42-14 with 5:41 remaining in the second quarter.
The Paladins reached the end zone of their first six possessions of the contest.
After Wofford (3-8, 3-5 SoCon) trimmed the lead to 42-21 before intermission, Furman outscored the Terriers 21-0 in the third quarter to take total command of the 96th meeting between the state and Deep South's oldest football rivals.
Huff scampered in from seven yards, and
Kendall Thomas finished off a 10-play drive with a one-yard plunge to up the lead to 56-21.
The Terriers drove into Paladin territory on their next possession, but
Cameron Coleman blocked a 41-yard field goal attempt, which teammate
Travis Blackshear scooped up and ran 65 yards for a touchdown.
It marked Furman's FCS leading ninth blocked kick of the season.
Huff completed 21-of-22 passes for 295 yards and rushed the ball eight times for 40 yards. Harris hauled in eight passes for 112 yards and touchdown, while Miller caught two touchdown passes to give him 27 for his career and become Furman's all-time touchdown receptions leader, moving ahead of Chas Fox (1982-85).
Roberto led the Furman rushing attack with 90 yards, including a pair of touchdowns.
The Paladins limited Wofford to only 37 yards rushing on 24 attempts. Furman's two interceptions gave the Paladins 23 takeaways on the season.
Furman's 63 points marked the second most scored against the Terriers in the series, trailing only the 69 tallied in a 69-0 win in 1920.
