Charleston, S.C. – Junior
Garrett Hien poured in a career-high 20 points to propel Furman to a 79-60 victory over instate foe South Carolina Sunday morning in the final round of the Shriners Children's Charleston Classic at TD Arena.
Hien, a native of Charlotte, N.C., made 8-of-12 shots from the floor, including 3-of-4 behind the arc, to pace four Paladins in double figures. The 6-foot-9 forward, who netted 13 of his game-high 20 in the second half, added five rebounds and three assists.
South Carolina raced out to an early seven-point lead and led 16-11 when Hien hustled down the court following a made basket to score a layup and start a 19-2 Paladin run.
Joe Anderson assisted on back-to-back buckets from
Marcus Foster and
Jalen Slawson to give Furman the lead before burying a triple of his own to up the Paladin advantage to 23-18. Hien drained a three,
JP Pegues connected on a jumper and
Ben VanderWal converted on two free throws to cap a 15-0 spurt that put Furman in front 30-18 with 6:35 left in the half.
After leading 38-31 at intermission, Furman stretched its lead to 13 points when Slawson hit a three and
Tyrese Hughey stole a pass and scored on a breakaway jam to give the Paladins a 49-36 cushion less than three minutes into the second half. The Gamecocks trimmed the margin to eight points on a couple of occasions, but Hughey made another three-pointer with 12:31 to go and South Carolina never got within single digits the rest of the way. Hien hit 5-of-6 second half shots to help Furman build its lead to as many as 20 points.
Slawson joined Hien in double figures with 14 points and added seven rebounds, five assists and two blocked shots. Hughey tallied 12 points, while
Mike Bothwell totaled 11 points and a career-best eight assists.
The Paladins (3-2), who shot 50.8% from the field and connected on 12-for-27 three-point tries, forced South Carolina into 17 turnovers and outscored the Gamecocks 23-4 on points off turnovers. Furman also managed a 34-24 edge on the glass.
South Carolina (2-3) shot 44.9% and made good on 7-of-22 three-point attempts. GG Jackson led the Gamecocks with 19 points and Chico Carter Jr. added 17.
Sunday's victory marked Furman's second straight triumph over the Gamecocks. In the previous meeting between the instate rivals, Furman claimed a 91-75 victory at Timmons Arena in Greenville, S.C., during the 2010-11 campaign.
Following Sunday's final game, Bothwell was named to the Charleston Classic All-Tournament Team. The Cleveland Heights, Ohio, native averaged 20 points, 4.3 rebounds and 5.8 assists per outing over three games in the tournament.
The Paladins are back in action on Friday afternoon when they host the Tusculum Pioneers. Tip-off at Timmons Arena is scheduled for 2 p.m.
