Furman Balanced Attack Too Much For Charleston Southern, 71-58

Paladins Place Four In Double Figures

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Jaelyn Acker's 19 points headlined a balanced attack that powered Furman to a 71-58 victory over Charleston Southern in women's basketball action Saturday evening at Timmons Arena.

Acker, a redshirt freshman guard from Richfield, Wisc., canned 5-of-10 3-point shots on her way to 19 points, which led a parade of four double figure scorers for Furman (3-3).

Sydney James followed Acker with 17 points, which she combined with a career high 14 rebounds, and Grace van Rij contributed 12 points.  Jada Session, a sophomore forward, rounded out the Paladins' double figure scoring effort with 11 points, which she combined with 12 rebounds for the first double figure performance of her Paladin tenure.

Jazmine Jackson topped Charleston Southern with 15 points.

Acker hit on 3-of-5 3-pointers in the first period to propel Furman (3-3) to a 29-11 lead.

The Paladins led 45-28 early in the third quarter when Charleston Southern reeled off 12 unanswered points to pull within 45-40 following a Jackson 3-pointer with 5:08 remaining in the period.

Furman's lead remained in single digits over the next four minutes until Grace van Rij fed James for a 3-pointer from the top of the circle to give the Paladins a 54-44 lead.

The Buccaneers used a Madison Adamson trey to cut Furman's advantage to 58-51 in the fourth quarter, but the Paladins responded with a 10-2 spurt to take command after van Rij took a James pass and converted a short jump shot for a 68-53 lead with 3:38 to go.

The Paladins shot a solid 45.5 percent from the field (25x55), including 8-of-19 from 3-point range (42.1 percent), and forged a 54-34 rebounding advantage.

Acker's two made free throws in the contest extended her streak of consecutive makes at the stripe to 24.

Furman plays host to Pfeiffer on Monday at 7:00 p.m.
