CONWAY, S.C. -- Aja Blount scored 16 points and Coastal Carolina used a powerful second quarter to race to a big halftime lead on the way to a 69-54 win over Furman in women's basketball action Sunday afternoon at the HTC Center.
The win was only the third for Coastal Carolina (3-5) in 21 meetings on the hardwood against Furman (6-5).
The Chanticleers trailed 20-18 after one quarter but dialed up a second quarter shutout, blanking the Paladins 24-0 in the period, to take command. Â
Anaya Barney scored nine of her 14 points to pace Coastal Carolina in the second period, as the Chanticleers connected on 7-of-19 shots, including four 3-pointers, and 6-of-7 free throws while Furman went 0-for-11 from the field in the period.
Blount's 16 points featured 7-of-8 shooting, which shed combined with nine rebounds. Â Arin Freeman contributed 12 points and a game high 16 caroms, which carried the Chanticleers to a 50-41 advantage on the glass.
Grace van Rij and
Sydney James led Furman with 14 points, and
Evie DePetro came of the bench to tally 12.
The Paladins shot just 31.7 percent from the field (20x63). Â Coastal Carolina, meanwhile, connected on 26-of-70 shots (37.1%).
Furman returns home to take on Kennesaw State this Thursday in a 7:00 p.m. game.
