James, Furman Power Past Radford In OT, 75-67

Paladin Junior Scores Career High 22 Points

GREENVILLE, S.C -- Sydney James scored a career high 22 points and combined it with 12 rebounds to help Furman power past Radford, 75-67, in overtime in women's basketball action Sunday afternoon at Timmons Arena.

James, a junior forward who had been slowed in the early season due to injuries, came to life in a big way for Furman (7-6), connecting on 8-of-16 shots, including a 3-pointer, and 5-for-5 free throws in 42 minutes of action.  The 22 points topped her previous high of 21 points registered against Samford last season.

Grace van Rij contributed 18 points and scored the first two baskets in overtime to stake the Paladins to a 65-61 lead.

Janay Outten's short jump shot in the lane put the Paladins up, 67-63, with 2:26 to go in the extra period.  Following a Radford miss, Furman freshman Sydney Ryan buried a 3-pointer from the left wing to stretch the advantage to 70-63 with 1:23 remaining to put Furman in control.

The Paladins rallied to take a 61-56 fourth quarter lead but couldn't close it out in regulation as the Highlanders scored the final five points to force overtime.

van Rij connected on 9-of-12 shots for her 18 points, and Jaelyn Acker finished with 12 points on just 3-of-13 shooting.  It was an Acker 3-ball midway through the third quarter, however, that sparked a 10-2 Paladin run that eliminated a 40-33 Furman deficit and gave the Paladins their first lead of the second half, 43-42, following an Acker free throw.

Vanessa Lake paced Radford (4-6) with 15 points, and Rachel Lalonde combined 12 points with 12 rebounds for the Highlanders, who got 11 points from Maci Rhoades.

Furman shot 43.8 percent from the field (28x64) and posted a 44-40 advantage in rebounding in the contest.  Radford connected on just 24-of-65 shots (36.9%) in the game, including just 8-of-31 from 3-point range.

The Paladins play at Georgia Tech on Wednesday in a 1:00 p.m. contest.
