Incarnate Word Clips Furman Late In FCS Playoffs, 41-38

Paladins Finish Season 10-3

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – Lindsey Scott connected with Kole Wilson on a 32-yard touchdown pass with just under two minutes remaining to lift Incarnate Word past Furman, 41-38, in FCS second round playoff action Saturday afternoon at Benson Stadium.

Furman, which trailed 31-17 in the third quarter, stormed back to take a 38-34 lead on 1 -yard touchdown plunge by quarterback Tyler Huff with 6:55 remaining.

The Paladins then stopped UIW on the ensuing possession when cornerback Micah Robinson batted down at fourth-down pass from Scott, giving the Paladins the ball at the 20-yard line. Back-to-back penalties backed up Furman, which was forced to punt from its own 5-yard line.  The Cardinals took possession at Furman 43, and three plays later Scott hit Wilson in stride in the back of the end zone for the go-ahead score.

Furman started its last possession at its own 25 and moved to the UIW 32, but on 1st-and-10, Huff's pass to a tight end Ryan Miller was picked off by Elliott Davison at the 9-yard line with 1:17 to go.

The Cardinals (11-1) advance to face the winner of Richmond-No. 2 Sacramento State next Saturday in the quarterfinal round. Furman finishes the 2022 season with a 10-3 overall record.

Huff threw for 171 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for 64 yards and two scores, to pace the Paladins offensively. The Orange Park, Fla., native completed 16-of-28 passes and rushed nine times. Dominic Roberto contributed 59 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. Joshua Harris caught four passes for 69 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, Furman got a pair of interceptions from cornerback Cally Chizik, whose first one on the game's opening possession he returned 36 yards for a touchdown to help stake Furman to an early 7-0 lead.

The Paladins had three players record 10 or more tackles, led by Kam Brinson's 13 stops. Braden Gilby added 11 tackles, and Bryce McCormick 10.
