GREENVILLE, S.C --
Grace van Rij scored 19 points to lead a contingent of five double figure scorers as Furman rolled past Brevard, 102-30, in women's basketball play Sunday afternoon at Timmons Arena.
The 102 points matched the highest scoring tally by a
Jackie Carson-coached team, first accomplished in a 102-51 win over Pfeiffer during the 2017-18 season, and the 72-point winning margin is a new school standard, topping the previous mark of 66 points posted in a 125-59 win over Charleston Southern during the 1990-91 season.
Furman (5-4) limited Brevard (5-4) to only 13 second half points after building a comfortable 53-17 halftime lead.
Van Rij registered her game high 19 points in just 23 minutes of playing time, hitting on 8-of-11 shots, and combining it with 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.
Freshmen
Jaelyn Acker and
Sydney Ryan followed with 13 points apiece, and
Jada Session and
Evie DePetro finished with 12 points each.
Ryan and Session joined van Rij in notching double-doubles, claiming 11 and 13 rebounds, respectively.
The Paladins dominated in every aspect of the contest, shooting 52.8 percent from the field (38x72) and forging a 56-29 rebounding advantage that contributed to a 50-10 scoring differential in the paint.
Furman's defense forced Brevard into 31 turnovers that helped give Furman 18 steals, including a career high six by Session. Â
Makayla Street was the only Tornado to score double figures with 12 points.
Acker connected on first two 3-point attempts of the game to help the Paladins race to a 17-2 lead over the first five minutes of play.
Furman returns to action on Wednesday when it hits the road for 7:00 p.m. contest at UNC Asheville.
