Furman Falls At Wofford, 72-54

Paladins' Five-Game Winning Streak Snapped

February 12, 2022

FURMAN FALLS AT WOFFORD, 72-54

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Jackie Carman scored a game high 21 points and Wofford took advantage of 21 Furman turnovers on the way to 72-54 Southern Conference victory over the visiting Paladins in women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at Richardson Indoor Stadium.

Carman drained 7-of-16 shots and led an effective Terrier performance from 3-point range by converting 5-of-14 treys to power Wofford (13-10, 8-1 SoCon) to its fifth consecutive victory.

Tierra Hodges paced Furman (14-10, 7-3 SoCon), matching her team leading 17 points with a game high 17 rebounds.  Tate Walters was the only other Paladin to reach double figures with 10 points.

The win kept Wofford within a half game of SoCon frontrunner Mercer, which routed UNCG, 75-43 on Saturday.  Furman, which saw its five-game winning streak snapped, remains in third place in the league standings, a game ahead of Samford.

The Paladins' miscues set Wofford up for a 25-5 advantage in points off turnovers.

Furman, which trailed 34-29 at intermission, used a Niveyah Henley 3-pointer to get within 43-41 with two minutes remaining in the third period, but Carman answered with back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Terriers a 49-41 advantage.

A Hodges layup less than two minutes into the fourth quarter cut Wofford's lead to 51-48, but the Terriers again blunted the Paladins, getting Lilly Hatton layup on the ensuing possession and an Annabelle Schultz 3-pointer to stretch their lead to 56-48 with 7:15 to go.

A pair of Grace van Rij free throws got the Paladins to within 57-52 with 3:42 remaining, but Wofford put the game away by outscoring Furman 15-2 the rest of the way.

The Terriers finished the game shooting 44.1 percent (26x59) while Furman struggled with a 34.4 percent effort from the field (21x61).

Hodges' 17 points upped her career tally to 1,524 points and moved the Paladin forward into seventh place on Furman's all-time scoring chart.  The double-double was her SoCon leading 16th of the season and 50th of her career.

Furman plays host to Samford on Saturday in a 7:00 p.m. contest.
