Chapel Hill, N.C. – Jamie Ortega scored a game high five goals to go with two assists to lead the second-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels to a 20-7 victory over the Furman women's lacrosse team in the Paladins' 2022 season opener, Wednesday afternoon from Dorrance Field.
Furman drops to 0-1 overall while North Carolina improves to 2-0 on the season.
Hannah Dintino and
Anna Roser led the Paladins offensively with two goals apiece while
Ryan Bionda,
Meagan Beal and
Lauren Farber scored once. Beal and
Paige Harman both dished out one assist. Farber picked up three ground balls and Dintino caused one turnover.
Sophia Buzelis won four draws.
In goal,
Lily Rathbun made nine saves.
Ortega was one of ten Tar Heels who scored a goal with Caitlyn Wurzburger and Andie Aldave adding three goals. Wurzburger led all players with a game high three assists. Emily Nalls provided four draws, three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Goalies Taylor Moreno, Alecia Nicholas and Stella Harrison combined for five saves.
Ortega scored all five of her goals in the first half as North Carolina recorded the game's first seven goals. Dintino and Farber got Furman on the board with back-to-back goals before the Tar Heels closed out the half on a 7-0 run to lead 14-2 at intermission.
Bionda started the third quarter scoring her first collegiate goal to make the score 14-3. North Carolina collected the final three goals of the period to lead 17-3. The Paladins outscored the Tar Heels 4-3 in the fourth quarter with Beal, Dintino and Roser tallying goals. Roser scored Furman's final two goals, including one with three seconds remaining in the contest, to put the final score at 20-7. The goals were the first of Roser's career.
The Paladins concluded the game with 14 shots, 11 ground balls and eight draws while forcing North Carolina into 10 turnovers.
Furman hosts Elon in its home opener on Saturday, March 5 at 2 p.m.
