GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman chalked up wins over Lipscomb and Belmont Abbey, each 6-1, Saturday at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.
The Paladins (7-1) won two out of three doubles matches versus the Bisons. Senior Ivan Mitric and freshman Jamie Connel defeated Sam Fischer and Gonzalo Garcia-Nieto, 6-2, at flight one, and senior James Roelofse and sophomore Emil Westling posted a 7-5 win over Pedro Uribe and Maksim Bogdanovich at flight two. Belmont Abbey's Carlos Salas Tulla teamed with Alex Mesquida to beat freshmen Cole Burnam and Elijah Poritzky, 6-3, at number three.
Furman won five of six singles matches to take the win over Lipscomb. Mitric blanked Bogdanovich, 6-0, 6-0, at flight one, and Connel defeated Uribe, 6-4, 6-2, at number two. At flight three, Poritzky recorded a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Garcia-Nieto, and at number four, Roelofse topped Mesquida, 6-3, 7-5. Graduate student Drew Singerman entered the lineup at flight six, where he beat Salas Tulla, 6-2, 6-1.
Fischer put the Bisons on the board with a 6-7, 6-2, 1-0(10-3) advantage versus Westling at flight five.
In the afternoon versus the Crusaders, Furman won at flights one and three doubles for the point. Roelofse and Westling held off Nicholas Cary and Xaveam Van Wijk, 6-4, in the top-seeded contest, and Connel and junior Jason Smith downed Jai Rowe and Matthew Orozco, 6-3, at number three. At flight two, Kent Shiell and Alex Turner defeated freshman Connor Laymon and sophomore Ben Cahill, 6-2.
The Paladins scored at flights one through four and flight six in singles. Connel moved to flight one, where he beat Van Wijk, 6-4, 5-7, 1-0(10-6), and Roelofse posted a 6-4, 6-2 win versus Cary at number two. At flight three, Westling slipped past Shiell, 6-1, 7-5, and Burnam tallied a 7-4, 7-6 advantage over Turner at number four. Smith topped Orozco, 6-3, 7-5, at flight six.
Rowe scored for the Crusaders at flight five, where he beat Cahill, 6-4, 6-2.
The Paladins (7-1) will entertain travel to Norfolk, Va., to take on Old Dominion next Saturday at 1 p.m.
