Furman Set To Finish Regular Season At Chattanooga, ETSU

Paladins Will Take No. 3 Seed Into Next Week's SoCon Tournament

Tierra Hodges
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman's women's basketball team is set to complete its regular season schedule on the road with a clash at Chattanooga on Thursday, followed by a Saturday battle at East Tennessee State.

Tipoff for the Thursday's game at UTC is set for 7:00 p.m., and Saturday's contest at ETSU is a noon tipoff.  Both games will be streamed via ESPN+, with links to the broadcast and live stats available through FurmanPaladins.com.

A victory against the Mocs or the Bucs would secure a winning season for head coach Jackie Carson's squad.

Furman (15-11, 8-4 SoCon) is assured a third place finish in the Southern Conference standings and will take the No. 3 seed into next week's Ingles SoCon Tournament at Harrah's Cherokee Center in Asheville, N.C.  The Paladins will face the No. 6 seed, which has yet to be determined, in a Thursday,  5:45 p.m. quarterfinal round matchup.  Click HERE for a tournament bracket.

Furman claimed wins over Chattanooga (7-20, 5-7 SoCon) and ETSU (5-20, 4-8 SoCon) in the season's first meetings in Greenville, posting a 63-50 verdict over the Mocs on Jan. 29 and a 68-54 triumph over the Buccaneers on Jan. 27.

The Paladins have fashioned three consecutive wins over Chattanooga and are 8-5 in the last 13 meetings with the Mocs.  Furman owns a six-game series winning streak against ETSU and is 45-22 all-time versus the Bucs.

In the first meeting against Chattanooga, senior forward Tierra Hodges tallied 22 points and 17 rebounds to pace Furman to the win.  Grace van Rij added 13 points for the Paladins, who used a Greyson Boone 3-pointer to ignite a third quarter rally for control of the contest.  Furman also commanded the boards with a 41-27 advantage.

Hodges was also the top story in the Paladins' first clash with ETSU, scoring 27 points, one shy of her career high, in the victory.  She was followed by van Rij's 18-point effort.

A two-time All-SoCon selection, Hodges is poised to finish her tenure ranked among the program's all-time leaders in several categories.  Her 18-point performance in Furman's last outing, a 71-64 home loss to regular season champion Mercer on Saturday, solidified her hold on sixth place on the career scoring chart.  Earlier this season she became the Paladins' all-time leading rebounder, with her standard now 1,207 caroms.  She has been named SoCon Player of the Week three times and has captured the league's player of the month all three times it has been presented this season.  The Covington, Ga., product tops the SoCon in both scoring (17.9 ppg) and rebounding (11.8 rpg), and ranks third in free throw percentage (.818).  She also owns a SoCon leading 17 double-doubles this year and 51 in her career.

In winning six of its last eight games, Furman has gotten steadily improved production from senior forward Grace van Rij, who is coming off back-to-back career best outings, including a 26-point performance against Mercer on Saturday.  The 6-foot-2 Knoxville, Tenn., product has scored at an 11.7 points per game clip over the last 14 contests and is shooting 51.8 percent from the field, second highest in the league.
