TAMPA, FLA. -- The Furman men's tennis team fell to South Florida, 6-1, Thursday at the Varsity Tennis Courts in Tampa, Fla.
Graduate student Drew Singerman scored for the Paladins at flight six singles, where he beat Manueal Goncalves, 7-6(1), 1-6, 1-0(11-9).
Furman freshmen Elijah Portizky and Cole Burnam picked up a victory at flight three doubles, downing Alvin Tudorica and Sergio Gomez Montesa, 6-3. The Bulls won the other two doubles matches for the point, as Rithvik Bollipalli and Bruno Oliveira topped 29th-ranked graduate student Ivan Mitric and freshman Jamie Connel, 7-6(5), at flight one, and Chase Ferguson and Goncalves outlasted sophomore Emil Westling and senior James Roelofse, 7-6(0), at flight two.
South Florida won at flights one through five singles. Ferguson defeated Mitric, 6-2, 7-5, at flight one, and Ivan Yatsuk held off Connel, 6-3, 6-7(2), 1-0(10-1), at flight two. At flight three, Antonio Muniz defeated Poritzky, 6-4, 6-2, and at number four, Tudorica recorded a 6-2, 7-5 advantage over Roelofse. Oliveira slipped past Westling, 7-5, 6-4, at number five.
The Paladins (8-7) will face Chattanooga on March 20 at 10 a.m. in Spartanburg, S.C., to open the Southern Conference season.
