Mike Bothwell has been named a finalist for the 2022 Lou Henson National Player of the Year Award, it was announced this afternoon by CollegeInsider.com.
The award is presented annually to the top mid-major player in Division I college basketball and is named after Lou Henson, who won 775 career games over a 41-year career at Illinois and New Mexico State.
Players on teams from the following conferences are eligible for the award: America East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Horizon, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mid-Eastern, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Summit, Sun Belt, West Coast.
A native of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, Bothwell was a first team All-SoCon selection this season by the league's head coaches and second team by the media. He also garnered second team All-District 21 accolades by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC).
He led Furman in scoring at 15.7 points per game to go with 4.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists while shooting 47.7 percent from the field and a team best 83.1 percent at the free throw line. Bothwell ranked 10
th or better for the SoCon in scoring, field goal percentage and free throw percentage.
Bothwell finished in double figures scoring 29 times including 20 or more points in nine contests. He began the season scoring at least 22 points in three consecutive games highlighted by a season high 30 on 7-of-17 shooting, and 13-of-15 at the free throw line, in Furman's 80-72 overtime win at Louisville on November 12. Bothwell matched his career high of eight rebounds and six assists twice. He was named first team SoCon All-Tournament after scoring in double digits three times highlighted by a 24-point performance in the championship game against Chattanooga on March 7.
The 2022 Lou Henson National Player of the Year award will be announced on April 1 in New Orleans, La.
