Furman Wins Big South Opener over Wofford, 20-11

Beal Breaks School Record with 15 Draws

Greenville, S.C. – The Furman women's lacrosse team captured its first-ever Big South Conference victory on Wednesday evening after defeating the Wofford Terriers, 20-11, at Paladin Stadium.

The win, the program's first under head coach Kirkland Lewis, improves Furman to 1-5 on the season and 1-0 in Big South play. Wofford drops to 2-6 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

The Paladins saw several career performances turned in Wednesday and scored a season high 20 goals in the victory. Furman scored at least 20 goals in a game for the first time since a 21-4 win over the Terriers in the semifinals of the last year's SoCon Women's Lacrosse Championship in Macon, Ga.

Meagan Beal set a new program record by winning 15 draws in the contest, surpassing the previous mark of 12 recorded by Avery McIlwaine last season against Winthrop.

Lauren Farber and Anna Roser both led the Paladins offensively compiling career highs of eight points apiece. Farber had a career high six goals while Roser compiled career bests of six goals and two assists. Beal matched her career highs of five goals and six points. Sophie Shaw and Hannah Dintino both registered three points on a goal and two assists and Dintino turned in a career high four ground balls along with Sophia Buzelis. Dintino, Paige Harman and Ellie Roser all caused two turnovers. In goal, Lily Rathbun recorded six saves and four ground balls.

Ally Furnari led Wofford with four goals and collected four points along with Emma Gentile and Olivia Abe. Gentile finished with three goals and one assist while Abe added three assists and one goal. Emma Seif and Moira Carroll both picked up four ground balls. Carroll would win four draws and Sief caused two turnovers with Gentile and Emma Krasinski. In goal, Aislinn Washburn and Ella Smithers combined for eight saves and four ground balls.

Farber collected a hat trick in the first quarter with her last giving Furman a 6-2 lead with 1:54 remaining in the period. The Terriers would cut their deficit down to 7-4 midway through the second quarter but the Paladins closed out the half scoring three consecutive goals, and holding Wofford scoreless for the final 7:36, to lead 10-4 at halftime. Beal also added a hat trick during the second quarter.

Anna Roser gave Furman its third hat trick scorer in as many quarters after netting three in the third. The Paladins continued their run into the second half scoring four of the first seven goals and held a 14-7 advantage at the 4:21 mark of the third quarter on Roser's goal.

The Terriers responded by scoring four straight goals and trailed 14-11 with 14:28 left in the contest when Krasinski recorded her second goal. Furman closed out the final 14 minutes on a 6-0 run with Farber sealing the victory with two more goals. Farber's final goal with 6:42 remaining gave the Paladins the 20-11 win.

Furman forced Wofford into 21 turnovers and held a 38-27 advantage in shots, 20-16 in ground balls and 22-13 in draws. The 22 draws won are also a school record and eclipses the old mark of 21 set twice against Stetson (4/21/2017) and Bucknell (3/10/2020).

The Paladins remain in conference play Saturday afternoon traveling to Boiling Springs, N.C. for a 1 p.m. contest against Gardner-Webb.
