Asheville, N.C. – David Jean-Baptiste's 3-pointer as time expired lifted the top-seeded Chattanooga Mocs to a 64-63 overtime victory over the second-seeded Furman men's basketball team on Monday evening in the championship game of the Ingles SoCon Men's Basketball Championship at Harrah's Cherokee Center.
Furman drops to 22-12 on the season. Chattanooga, who earned the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, improved to 27-7 overall.
Mike Bothwell scored a game high 24 points on 9-of-13 shooting to lead the Paladins and added four rebounds and one block.
Alex Hunter poured in 12 points on four 3-pointers and five rebounds.
Jalen Slawson contributed eight points, four rebounds and three blocks.
Garrett Hien came off the bench to score eight points on 4-of-7 shooting.
Jean-Baptiste finished with 13 points for the Mocs while Silvio DeSousa led the team with 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Malachi Smith contributed 12 points and eight rebounds.
Furman trailed by seven with 4:10 remaining in the contest before Bothwell, who scored 12 points in the second half, capped a 7-0 run with a 3-pointer to tie the game at 46-46 with 2:12 to go. Chattanooga would go up by three points twice over the final 1:52 with the last coming at 51-48 on DeSousa's layup with 23 seconds to go.
Bothwell sent the game into overtime on his 3-pointer with four seconds remaining and Smith's go-ahead attempt with two seconds left was blocked by Slawson.
The teams combined to shoot 9-of-10 in the overtime period with the Paladins making all five of their attempts. Bothwell scored seven of Furman's 12 points after going 3-of-3 from the field.
The Paladins led by as many as three points in overtime beginning at 56-53 with 2:28 remaining on Bothwell's jumper. The Mocs cut the lead down to one before Hien's layup with 43 seconds to go gave Furman a 61-58 lead. The teams traded baskets with Bothwell putting the Paladins in front 63-61 with four seconds left.
Furman concluded the game shooting 44.2 percent (23-of-52) from the field. The Paladins held the advantage in points off turnovers (15-6) and bench points (12-10).
The Paladins had three players named to the SoCon All-Tournament Team in Bothwell, Slawson and
Conley Garrison. Bothwell and Slawson were selected to the first team and Garrison earned a spot on the second team.
