Greenville, S.C. – Ashlee Lykins' RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning gave the Furman softball team a 1-0 victory over the Samford Bulldogs in the finale of a three-game Southern Conference series, Saturday afternoon at Pepsi Stadium.
Furman improves to 15-24 overall and 3-6 in the SoCon. Samford falls to 23-15 on the year and 8-1 in league play.
Caitlin Goldwait led off the bottom of the seventh getting hit by a pitch and quickly advanced to second on
Chrissy Fleming's sacrifice bunt.
Becca Crawford, who pinch ran for Goldwait after Fleming's sacrifice bunt, moved to third when
Chloe Fabio reached on a Bulldog throwing error. Lykins delivered the game-winning single the following at-bat through the right side and scored Crawford, giving Samford its first SoCon loss of the season.
Lykins, a sophomore from Naples, Fla., went 3-for-3 at the plate with one RBI to lead the Paladins offensively. Fabio and
Riley Ludlam both collected one hit while Crawford scored the game's only run.
Seven different Samford players registered one hit apiece.
Sophomore
Sierra Tufts (6-12), a native of Chula Vista, Calif., threw her third complete game shutout of the season to earn the win after giving up seven hits, one walk and three strikeouts. With today's win in the circle, Tufts recorded her team leading 11
th complete game of the season and 17
th of her career.
Jordyn Partain (5-6) suffered the loss allowing one run on five hits, three walks and three strikeouts in 6.1 innings of work.
Furman travels to Columbia on Wednesday, April 20 for a doubleheader against South Carolina beginning at 3 p.m.
