Greenville, S.C. – The Furman women's lacrosse team dropped a 22-12 decision in Big South Conference play to the High Point Panthers, Wednesday evening at Paladin Stadium.
Furman drops to 5-7 overall and 5-2 in the Big South while High Point improves to 7-8 overall and 6-1 in league play.
Meagan Beal and
Anna Roser led the Paladins offensively with three points each on two goals and one assist. Beal added a team high eight draws.
Hannah Dintino,
Paige Harman and
Lauren Farber each contributed two goals.
Sophie Shaw added three points on one goal and a team leading two assists and
Sophia Buzelis had two points on a goal and an assist. Farber was one of six players that caused a turnover and picked up a team best five ground balls. In goal,
Lily Rathbun made nine saves.
Abby Hormes scored a game high nine goals and had two assists for the Panthers with Mena Loescher contributing an additional four goals and an assist to lead High Point offensively. Mandy Brockamp, Esprit Cha and Kay Rosselli each had two goals. Pia Cavallaro, Emma Genovese and Jordan Miles each scored one goal for the Panthers. Hormes won 10 draws. Taylor Suplee registered nine saves in goal and grabbed four ground balls.
Hormes and Brockamp contributed the first two goals of the game for High Point, but Furman answered with Shaw, Harman and Dintino scoring three consecutive goals to make the score 3-2. Hormes scored again to tie the score before Farber put the Paladins back in the lead less than a minute later. Genovese added a last second goal to even the score at 4-4 through one quarter.
Loescher scored off an assist from Hormes with 12:54 left in the second quarter before Harman scored for the Paladins to tie the game at 5-5. Hormes then added another goal with an assist from Nicole Pugh before Dintino and Buzelis took the lead again for Furman, 7-6, at the 5:40 mark with a pair of goals. Hormes and Roser then exchanged goals to make the score 8-7 in favor of the hosts. High Point finished the first half scoring three consecutive goals, the first by Rosselli and the next two from Hormes, to give it a 10-8 lead at halftime.
The Panthers outscored Furman 8-0 in the third quarter to go in front 18-8. Jordan Miles capped High Point's run with an unassisted goal to open the fourth quarter to extend its lead to 19-8 with 14:10 remaining. The Paladins closed out the game on a 4-3 run with Beal scoring twice and Farber and Roser adding a goal apiece.
Cha and Brockamp scored back-to-back goals for the Panthers over the last 1:40 to make the final score 22-12.
Furman concluded the game with 30 shots, 15 ground balls and 15 draws.
The Paladins travel to Buies Creek, N.C. on Saturday, April 23 to take on Campbell at 1 p.m. in their final road game of the regular season.
