GREENVILLE, S.C. -- No. 36 Furman swept Samford, 7-0, Saturday at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.
The Paladins swept the doubles matches to score the first point. Senior Julia Adams and sophomore Ellie Schoppe, who rank 36th nationally, downed R.J. Van Rensburg and Alexis Lopez, 6-2, at flight one, and junior Madison Dillon and freshman Ellie Schulson blanked Lindsay Song and Olivia Jablonski, 6-0, at number two. At flight three, freshmen Sara Snyder and Jess Dawson held off Samantha Nanere and Sofia Zaprianov, 6-3.
Furman won all six singles matches, five in straight sets. Adams, who ranks 59th nationally, outlasted Van Rensburg, 3-6, 7-6(4), 1-0(10-7), in the top-seeded contest. Schoppe defeated Nanere, 6-3, 6-1, at flight two, and Snyder moved into the third slot, where she beat Lopez, 6-4, 7-5. At flight four, Dillon recorded a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Ally Hayduk, and at flight five, Schulson posted a 6-3, 6-4 advantage versus Zaprianov. At number six, Dawson blew past Song, 6-1, 6-1.
Furman (16-6, 5-0 SoCon) will travel to UNC Greensboro on Sunday. First serve is scheduled for noon at the UNCG Tennis Complex.
