Greensboro, N.C. – The fourth-seeded Furman softball team dropped a 9-0 decision in five innings to the top-seeded UNC Greensboro Spartans in a winner's bracket game on day two of the SoCon Softball Championship, Thursday afternoon at UNCG Softball Stadium.
Furman falls to 21-32 on the season while UNC Greensboro improves to 38-16 overall. The Paladins will now play No. 6 seed Western Carolina in an elimination game at 5:30 p.m.
Samantha Lagrama homered twice in the contest highlighted by a grand slam during a seven-run bottom of the fourth inning that extended UNCG's lead out to 9-0. Jessie Shipley got the scoring started in the fourth with her two RBI double and Jordan Gontram followed with a bases loaded walk.
Lagrama put the Spartans on the board first in the second inning with her solo home run to left center field. Makenna Matthijs extended UNC Greensboro's lead to 2-0 on an RBI single to left center field.
Morgan Scott (24-11) earned the win after pitching all five innings and surrendered two hits and one walk while striking out nine.
Sierra Tufts (10-16) took the loss for the Paladins surrendering eight runs on six hits, five walks and one strikeout in 3.1 innings of work.
Ashlee Lykins and
Caitlin Goldwait collected one hit apiece to lead Furman while
Natalie Morgan drew a walk.
Lagrama concluded the game 2-for-3 with five RBI and two runs scored for UNCG, and Shipley provided two hits and two RBI. Blayke Batten also scored twice.
