Greensboro, N.C. – The fourth-seed Furman softball team scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth to come back and defeat the sixth-seeded Western Carolina Catamounts, 8-5, in an elimination game on day two of the SoCon Softball Championship, Thursday evening at UNCG Softball Stadium.
The Paladins advance in the SoCon Softball Championship after improving to 22-32 on the season. With the loss, the Catamounts' season ends at 19-34 overall.
Furman led 2-0 heading into the sixth inning after plating single runs in the second and fourth.

Caitlin Goldwait in the bottom of the second before
Marina Griffin extended the Paladins' lead to 2-0 in the fourth with her RBI double to right field.
Western Carolina responded by scoring five times in the top of the sixth to go in front 5-2 on a pair of singles and back-to-back home runs. Myra Twitty and Addie Pate started the scoring with their singles before Savannah Rice and Bailey Treadway hit back-to-back homers to put the Catamounts ahead by three runs.
The Paladins answered by scoring six runs during their half of the sixth inning that was capped by
Riley Ludlam's seventh home run of the season. Goldwait and
Natalie Morgan led off the frame with walks and both would advance on a wild pitch. Griffin plated Goldwait with her RBI single, and Fabio followed with a two RBI double to left center field that scored Morgan and Griffin.
Alex Rose Molinar gave Furman the lead back three batters later with her RBI double to center field. Ludlam would extend the Paladins' advantage out to three runs the next at-bat with her two-run homer.
Emme Buzhardt (5-3) came on in relief to earn the win tossing 1.2 scoreless innings and did not allow a hit while striking out three. Rice (10-16) took the loss giving up six runs (five earned) on seven hits, three walks and two strikeouts over five innings of work.
Molinar led the Paladins offensively after going 3-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Ludlam and Griffin both provided two hits and two RBI. Fabio registered two RBI and Goldwait scored three runs.
Treadway had a team high two hits for Western Carolina and Rice drove in two runs.
Furman will play either No. 2 Samford or No. 5 Mercer on Friday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. The tournament schedule for Friday has been altered due to the threat of inclement weather in the Greensboro area.
