Greenville, S.C. – Furman netted three first half goals to down Presbyterian, 3-0, in the women's soccer regular season opener for both schools Friday night before a crowd of 1,247 at Stone Stadium.
"It was a solid start to the season, and we had great support from the student body tonight, especially the freshman class," said Paladin head coach
Andrew Burr. "
Stella Garcia scored her first collegiate goal, and we really took care of our business in the first half. That allowed us to play a lot of people tonight."
Garcia, a product of Greenville's Wade Hampton High School, opened the scoring at the 15:52 mark when
Hannah Farr slid a pass to the freshman who finished to the righthand corner first her first goal as a Paladin. Sophomore
Ashlyn Goila doubled the lead at the 21:47 mark. After Farr had her initial shot blocked, Goila collected the loose ball and line a shot past PC goalkeeper Kelly Hall.
Senior
Julia Nicholas capped the scoring in the 38
th minute. Junior
Nieva Gaither weaved through the Blue Hose defense and sent a low cross from the right side of the box to Nicholas who finished from close range at the 37:03 mark.
Addison Corn, who notched three saves, combined with
Nora Sampson to record the shutout for Furman, while Presbyterian's Hall took the loss after stopping one shot.
The Blue Hose held a 12-7 edge in total shots with both teams totaling four shots on goal.
Furman is back in action at Stone Stadium on Sunday at 2 p.m. versus North Greenville. Single game tickets are $5 and can be purchased online at FurmanPaladins.com or at the Stone Stadium entrance.
