GREENVILLE, S.C. – Furman's quarterback position has generated its share of speculation in advance of the 2022 season.
The graduation of
Hamp Sisson has ensured the position will likely be entrusted to a single starter under the direction of new offensive coordinator
Justin Roper. It also appears for the first time since 2017 Furman won't be in position to depend on a freshman or player with limited experience to execute its offense.
The two top contenders for the job are
Jace Wilson (5-11, 181, So.) and
Tyler Huff (6-1, 208, Gr.).
A year ago Wilson sat on the sidelines for the first three games before seeing his first action and proceeding to register starts in six of the Paladins' final seven contests. Over that span he passed for 1,020 yards and six touchdowns (3 INTs) while also rushing for a pair of scores. That solid work, highlighted by a 14-for-23 passing effort for 189 yards and a touchdown against Wofford (42-20 win) in his first start, propelled him to SoCon All-Freshman Team honors.
"Jace has made some great progress," said Paladin head coach
Clay Hendrix recently. "He has done some things you expect him to do moving from his freshman to his sophomore year. Even with the coaching staff changes and new system, he has handled it well."
Huff joined the Paladin program in early summer after graduating from Presbyterian (S.C.) College, where he appeared in 22 games over three seasons and made 14 starts while passing for 2,560 yards and 21 touchdowns. In addition, he rushed for 515 yards and six scores.
"Tyler had knee surgery a year ago, but I haven't noticed once where it's bothered him," said Hendrix. "He's an athletic guy who is older and has played. He's also very smart and mature and has been a great addition to our program who has raised the level of competition, which I believe will continue.
Highly regarded newcomer
Carson Jones (6-2, 205, Fr.), a 6A all-state selection from Maryville, Tenn., will provide backup duty.
"Carson has won that third spot with his ability," said Hendrix. "We've been really pleased with his performance. Coach Roper has thrown him in there against the first teams, and he has responded. He makes some freshman mistakes, but he has as a really bright future."
Expected to provide additional depth are
Charles Watson (5-8, 172, R-So.),
David Renard (6-1, 185, Fr.), and
Dixon Massingill (6-3, 180, Fr.).
