Furman Football Announces Team Captains

2022 Furman Team Captains
GREENVILLE, S.C. – Furman head football coach Clay Hendrix announced today that Devin Abrams, Jacob Johanning, Ryan Miller, Matt Sochovka, and Dae'one Wilkins have been elected team captains for the Paladins' upcoming season.

Sochovka is a graduate student, and Abrams, Miller, and Wilkins are seniors.  Johanning is a redshirt junior.

Sochovka, a 6-4, 296-pound defensive tackle from Fayetteville, N.C., counts 14 starts over three seasons, though only one last year before sustaining a season ending knee injury in the Paladins' 29-18, season opening win over North Carolina A&T.  He is a three-time Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll selection.

Abrams is a veteran of 34 games and 29 starts during his Paladin career that has seen him rush for 1,230 yards and nine touchdowns.  The 6-1, 215-pound running back and Pensacola, Fla., native ran for 615 yards and six scores in 2019 en route to earning SoCon All-Freshman Team honors.

A two-time All-America selection as a tight end who was recently named to the Stats Perform Walter Payton Award Watch List, Miller caught 43 passes for 749 yards and seven touchdowns in 2021.  Four of the 6-2, 221-pound Jackson, Tenn., product's seven touchdown catches a year ago covered 50-plus yards, including a career best 87-yard play in the Paladins' triumph over North Carolina A&T.  His 16 career touchdown receptions is a record for Furman tight ends.

Wilkins, a strong safety, has seen action in 30 games and posted 13 starts during his Paladin tenure, mostly at the spur position. The 6-0, 202-pound product of Spring Hope, N.C., has landed SoCon Academic Honor Roll citations each of the last two seasons.

Johanning, who played his prep ball at Greenville's St. Joseph's School, has tallied 17 starts at offensive guard over the past three seasons, which includes his selection to the 2020 SoCon All-Freshman Team.  He is a 6-3, 276-pound product of Simpsonville, S.C., and three-time SoCon Academic Honor Roll pick.

Furman kicks off its 2022 season on Thursday, Sept. 1, when it plays host to North Greenville in a 7:00 p.m. game.
