Garcia, Sampson Help Furman Edge Charleston On Senior Night, 1-0

Greenville, S.C. – Freshman Stella Garcia netted her fifth goal of the season and senior Nora Sampson recorded a career-best 10 saves to lead Furman to a 1-0 victory over College of Charleston on Senior Night presented by Foster Victor Wealth Management at Stone Soccer Stadium on Friday evening.

With the victory, Furman concluded its non-conference schedule at 5-4-0 while the Cougars dropped to 6-3-0 on the season. The triumph upped Furman's all-time record versus its former SoCon rivals to 20-2-5.

"We've talked about improving throughout the non-conference schedule and I we got a win against a very good College of Charleston team tonight," said Paladin head coach Andrew Burr. "It was good to see us continue to make positive steps forward as a team. Senior Night was a success and all four seniors helped contribute to the win."

Furman scored the lone goal of the match in the 26th minute. Junior Nieva Gaither lined a dipping shot from the top of the box that rebounded off the Cougars' goalkeeper to the right side of the box. Garcia, a product of Wade Hampton High School, nodded in the rebound at the 25:52 mark to put the Paladins on top.

Both teams threatened to score throughout the 90 minutes, but Sampson, making her second start of the season, posted her second shutout of the week by stopping a career-high 10 College of Charleston shots. Savannah Barron turned away seven shots for the Cougars in a losing effort.

Furman compiled a 20-17 edge in total shots and an11-10 margin shots on goal. Gaither tallied three shots on target, while Julie Galie and Hannah Farr took two apiece. College of Charleston's Grace Powell forced Sampson into four saves on the night.

The Paladins open Southern Conference play next Friday when they travel to Johnson City, Tenn., for a showdown versus ETSU at Summers-Taylor Stadium.
