Furman Men's Soccer Blanks UNC Asheville, 2-0

Kraus, Diaz-Santillan Net Goals For The Paladins

Greenville, S.C. – Christian Kraus and Alfredo Diaz-Santillan netted second half goals to power the Furman men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over UNC Asheville Saturday night on Seagraves Field at Stone Stadium.

Senior Ben Roberts stopped four shots, all in the second half, to lead Furman to its third shutout of the season. The Paladins improved to 4-1-1 while the Bulldogs slipped to 1-6-0.

"It's great to get back to our winning ways," said Paladin head coach Doug Allison. "We worked hard in training this week on finishing and it paid off for us in the second half. It was great to see Kraus get the winning goal."

Furman dominated possession in the first half and outshot the Bulldogs 10-0, but the match reached intermission at 0-0. Kraus broke the scoreless tie with his second goal of the year less than five minutes into the second half. Josh Hosie dropped a pass to Dylan Lane who served a cross from the top corner of the box and Kraus rose above his defender to head a shot past UNCA goalkeeper A.J. Bengds at the 49:49 mark.

Asheville turned up the pressure after falling behind and registered 11 second half shots. Roberts, the reigning Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week, kept the clean sheet, highlighted by a leaping effort to push a shot over the bar midway through the half.

The Paladins put the match away in the 88th minute on Diaz-Santillan's first goal of the campaign. Dylan Lane sprung the senior free behind the defense with a through ball and Diaz-Santillan deposited a shot into the right side of the net at 87:48 to double the margin.

Kraus totaled nine shots to lead Furman to a 24-11 advantage in total shots and 13-4 edge in shots on goal. Bengds recorded nine saves for the Bulldogs.

Furman travels to Rock Hill, S.C. on Tuesday evening to take on the Winthrop Eagles. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
