Furman Falls in Five Sets at Wofford

Headley, Tanner Finish with Double-Doubles to Lead Paladins

Spartanburg, S.C. – Kennedy Smith led three Terriers with double-figure kills on Wednesday evening to pace Wofford to a 3-2 (25-21, 25-16, 24-26, 16-25, 15-7) victory in Southern Conference action over the Furman volleyball team at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.

Furman drops to 4-10 on the season and 0-4 in league play. With the win, Wofford improves to 9-6 overall and 1-2 in the conference.

Mary Beth Headley and Sarah Turner both registered a double-double to lead the Paladins. Headley led all players with 18 kills (ties career high) and 15 digs (career high) to collect her second double-double of the season. Turner provided 26 assists and 14 digs to finish with her team leading sixth double-double of the year. Lauren Haynes provided 14 kills and seven digs over the final three sets. Ella Abraham dished out 12 assists and Hadlee Ackerman added 10 digs.

Smith totaled 16 kills and recorded a double-double after tallying 13 digs for the Terriers. Bella Zeman provided 14 kills and Sarah MacLean 11. Victoria Hensley and Emily Hodsdon combined for 52 assists. Abbey Richman posted 14 digs and Mary Emily Morgan 13.

The opening 20 points of the first set saw the score tied six times with Furman evening the score at 10-10 when Ava Augustson and Genevieve Perry combined for a block. Wofford followed with an 8-3 run before the Paladins responded with a 7-3 run of their own to trail 21-20. Headley, who had seven kills on .462 hitting in the frame, cut Furman's deficit down to one with her kill. The Terriers closed out the set scoring four of the last five points to win 25-21.

The Paladins stayed within three points for a majority of the second set and trailed 15-14 midway after Ackerman's service ace. Wofford then used a 10-2 run to conclude the set. Following a late Furman timeout, the Terriers ended the set on a 4-1 run to pick up the 25-16 victory.

Haynes made her first appearance of the match in the third set and collected nine of the Paladins' 17 kills. With the score tied at 4-4, Furman benefited from an 8-3 run and held a 12-7 advantage capped by a solo block from Kelsey Watkins, leading to a Wofford timeout. The Terriers came out of the break and went on a 6-1 run to go in front 17-13. Wofford held a 20-17 lead late before the Paladins came back with a 7-4 run and tied the score at 24-24 on a Terrier service ace. A pair of Wofford errors led Furman to the 26-24 triumph.

The Paladins forced the Terriers into eight attack errors in the fourth set while hitting .280 as a team. Furman began by scoring six of the first eight points with Headley giving it a four-point lead with her kill. Wofford managed to trim the lead down to three, 12-9, but the Paladins answered by breaking the set open with a 10-3 run to go ahead 22-12. Furman combined for six blocks throughout the set with three solo blocks coming during the run from Headley, Sydney Tanner and Grainne McGrath. Haynes gave the Paladins the 25-16 win with her kill.

The Terriers started the fifth set picking up three of the initial four points before Furman cut its deficit down to 5-3 on Tanner's kill. The Paladins would be held to just four points the remainder of the frame. Furman got as close as 8-5 following a timeout on Morgan Cobb's solo block. Wofford finished on a 7-2 run for the 15-7 set win and 3-2 match victory.

For the fourth time this season, the Paladins posted double-digit blocks after finishing with 11. McGrath led the team with three blocks (two solo, one assisted) while Tanner and Watkins both had two solo.

Furman is off until next weekend, October 7-8, when it hosts Mercer and Samford in a pair of Southern Conference matches at Alley Gymnasium.
