GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Akira Wiggins scored 18 points, including 14 in the second half, to help power UNC Greensboro past Furman, 60-49, in Southern Conference women's basketball action Thursday evening at Fleming Gymnasium.

The win improves UNCG to 9-8 overall and 2-1 in SoCon play while Furman falls to 8-9 and 0-2 in league action.  The Paladins return to action on Saturday against Western Carolina in Cullowhee, N.C., in a 2:00 p.m. contest.

Faith Price followed Wiggins, scoring 13 of her 16 points over the game's final 20 minutes.

Leading 38-36 after three quarters, the Spartans took control by opening the final period on a 9-2 run that included basked by Wiggins and Price.  A driving layup by Nitzan Amar with 7:40 remaining capped the run and gave UNCG a 47-38 advantage.

The Paladins cut the lead to six points at 47-41 on a basket by Grace van Rij, but never threatened thereafter.

van Rij led Furman with 17 points and nine rebounds, and Jada Session finished with 14 points for the Paladins, who shot just 31.1 percent from the field (19x61) and just 2-of-19 from 3-point range (10.5%).  Furman committed 21 turnovers. 

UNCG connected on just 21-of-62 shots (33.3%) but outscored Furman 21-6 from 3-point range by connecting on 7-of-21 shots from beyond the arc.

The Paladins outrebounded a 46-38 edge in rebounding, including 10 by Sydney James, matching a game high.

Furman led 19-12 midway through the second quarter but watched its lead erased in less than two minutes as the Spartans used a 7-0 run to draw even at 19-19 on a Wiggins layup following a Paladin turnover.
