DURHAM, N.C. -- No. 6 Duke blanked Furman, 7-0, Friday in the season opener for both teams at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center in Durham, N.C.
The Blue Devils won two out of three doubles matches to take the first point. Ellie Coleman and Karolina Berankova teamed up to beat senior Madison Dillon and freshman Luca Victoria Vocke, 6-2, at flight two, and Emma Jackson and Iuliia Bryzgalova defeated sophomores Marissa Pennings and Ellie Schulson, 6-1, at number three. The top-seeded contest was unfinished, with Chloe Beck and Cameron Morra, who rank 13th nationally, leading sophomores Jess Dawson and Sara Snyder, 5-3.
In singles highlights, Furman's Dawson took 28th-ranked Morra to a tie-breaker at flight two. Morra claimed set one, 6-1, then Dawson rebounded with a 4-6 victory to push the match to a tie-breaker, which Morra won, 10-4.
Duke posted straight-set victories in the remaining singles matches, with third-ranked Beck topping Schulson, 6-1, 6-2, at flight one, and No. 22 Jackson besting Pennings, 6-0, 6-1, at number three. At flight four, Coleman defeated Dillon, 6-1, 6-1, and Bryzgalova stopped Vocke, 6-3, 6-4, at flight five. In the number six match up, Brianna Shvets held off Snyder, 6-3, 6-4.
Furman (0-1) will entertain Iowa on Sunday, January 22, at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C., in the Paladins' 2023 home opener.
