Furman Mourns The Passing Of Tom Wall

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman University mourns the passing of former head baseball coach Tom Wall, who served as the Paladins' mentor for 22 seasons and directed the program to three Southern Conference championships.

Wall, who died on January 11 in Mauldin, S.C., was 85 years old.

A native of Moncks Corner, S.C., he was a four-year letterman as a first baseman for the Paladins and 1959 graduate.

He registered two coaching stints at his alma mater, from 1970-71, and later 1974-93.  His first team claimed a share of the SoCon championship, and his 1976 Paladin squad won the conference championship and went on to beat both Virginia Tech (5-4) and defending national runner-up South Carolina (12-1) in the NCAA Atlantic Regional.

Wall's 1991 Furman team claimed the school's first SoCon Tournament championship with a walk-off, ninth inning home run that beat top-seed Western Carolina, 11-9, in Charleston, qualifying the Paladins for the NCAA Tournament.
