GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Raven Thompson scored six of her game high 13 points in second overtime to help lift Chattanooga past Furman, 51-44, in Southern Conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at Timmons Arena.
Thompson, a freshman guard from Atlanta, Ga., broke a 42-42 deadlock by converting a three-point play 45 seconds into the second overtime, followed that up with a free throw less than a minute later, and finished off her personal six-point run with a layup to give the Mocs (11-9, 3-2 SoCon) a 48-44 lead with 2:40 remaining.
The Paladins (9-11, 1-4 SoCon), whose only basket in the final five-minute frame came from
Paraskevi Koilia to cut UTC's lead to 46-44, failed to score on their final eight possessions.
The win halted Chattanooga's five-game series losing skid to Furman, which was led by
Grace van Rij with 12 points. Â
Sydney James added nine points to go along with a career high 21 rebounds — the fourth highest carom tally in program history and most by a Paladin since the 2014-15 season.
Furman, which trailed 36-25 late in the third quarter, held Chattanooga scoreless for a span of 11:13, during which time the Paladins fashioned an 11-0 run to tie the game at 36-36 following a James free throw with 2:58 remaining.
A Thompson free throw with 50 seconds to go in regulation halted the Mocs' scoring drought and gave UTC a 37-36 lead.
Furman's
Paraskevi Koilia converted two free throws 10 seconds later to put the Paladins, up 38-37.
After Chattanooga tied it with a free throw, only their second point of the fourth quarter, the Paladins turned the ball over on their final possession, leading to overtime.
Both teams shot under 30 percent for the contest, with Chattanooga converting just 18-of-61 shots (29.5%) and Furman 16-of-57 (28.1%). Â The Mocs connected on just 6-of-27 3-pointers while the Paladins only 1-of-12 from beyond the arc.
The two teams deadlocked on the boards at 45-45. Â The Mocs' Addie Porter, a 5-foot-4 guard, was credited with 20 rebounds while scoring 11 points.
