RALEIGH, N.C. -- Illinois blanked Furman, 4-0, Saturday in the final day of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend Saturday at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center in Raleigh, N.C.
Furman scored set wins at flights five and six singles, as senior Madison Dillon won her second set, 6-4, over Kasia Treiber at number five to force a third set, and sophomore Alexa Griffith held off Kida Ferrari, 7-6 (10-8), with a tiebreaker victory in the second set at number six.
The Illini (2-1) recorded victories at flights one and two doubles to score the opening point. Kate Duong and Megan Heuser, who rank 19th nationally, topped sophomores Jess Dawson and Sara Snyder, 6-1, at flight one, and Emily Casati and Josie Frazier recorded a 6-3 victory over sophomores Marissa Pennings and Ellie Schulson at flight two. The flight three match was unfinished.
In singles action, Illinois scored at flights one, three, and four for the team win. Duong posted a 6-2, 6-2 advantage over Dawson in the top-seeded match up, and Frazier defeated Pennings, 6-3, 6-4, at number three. At flight four, Snyder fell, 6-3, 6-1, to Heuser.
Matches at flights two, five, and six were unfinished, with flights five and six in the third set after Dillon and Griffith turned things around with second-set victories.
Furman (0-4) will entertain Tennessee Friday at 3 p.m. at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.
