FCS 4th/5th-Ranked Furman Set For Road Clash At Samford

Paladins Look To Extend Nine-Game SoCon Winning Streak

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Coming off a 28-14 victory over historic rival The Citadel, Furman hits the road for a Saturday clash against defending Southern Conference champion Samford at the Bulldogs' Seibert Stadium.  Kickoff for the ESPN+ streamed event is set for 1:00 p.m. ET.

For Furman (4-1, 2-0 SoCon), ranked 4th/5th in this week's AFCA and Stats Perform FCS Polls, respectively, Samford (3-3, 2-2 SoCon) represents the first of three ranked foes the Paladins will face on the road over the next four weeks, including Western Carolina (Oct. 21) and Chattanooga (Nov. 4), making the stretch pivotal as far as SoCon title and playoff designs are concerned.

The Bulldogs, who opened league play with a 30-7 setback at Western Carolina and 47-24 home loss to Chattanooga, have evened their league slate with consecutive triumphs over East Tennessee State and Wofford.  Samford's playoff hopes hinge on wins the rest of the way.

Although a relatively young series that heated up after the Bulldogs joined the SoCon in 2008, Furman and Samford have already played a number of memorable games, with nine over the last 15 meetings decided by a touchdown or less.  A year ago, in a contest that proved to have league title implications,  Samford overcame a 10-0 first quarter deficit to claim a 34-27 verdict at Paladin Stadium.  Two years ago the Paladins knocked off Samford, 41-34, in Birmingham on the strength of a 216-yard rushing performance by Dominic Roberto.  That victory improved the Paladins to 7-2 in their last nine visits to Seibert Stadium.

Head coach Clay Hendrix's Paladins, the consensus preseason No. 1 pick by SoCon coaches and media, will need their full offensive and defensive arsenals to extend their league winning streak to nine games.

One key to success on Saturday will hinge on the performance of graduate quarterback Tyler Huff, whose lone game absence a year ago due to injury came in the Paladins' loss to Samford.  The Furman signal caller has delivered productive play this fall, passing for 852 yards and four touchdowns while rushing for a team leading 312 yards and four scores.

Huff will look to execute a balanced attack that averages 170.6 yards on the ground an 196.2 yards per game through the air.  Roberto figures to be a big part of Saturday's game plan as he looks to continue his climb up Furman's career rushing ledger with 2,380 yards and 26 touchdowns.

The Paladins' passing attack features 18 players with receptions, led by wide receiver Joshua Harris (20 rec., 188 yds.), who recently cracked Furman's Top 20 career receptions chart.

The return of redshirt senior All-America offensive guard Jacob after missing the first three games due to injury has been a boost to an experienced offensive front that also features All-SoCon tackle Pearson Toomey and center Wyatt Hughes.

Furman's defense, which will be pressured by Samford's All-America quarterback Michael Hiers and a potent Bulldogs' attack, will counter with an experienced and deep defensive front led by tackle Matt Sochovka, nose guard Xavier Stephens, and end Jack Barton.  The ability to pressure Hiers, a challenging task, could prove pivotal as the Paladins look to improve on the six sacks they've recorded this season.

The Paladin linebacking corps is also a veteran group, led by Braden Gilby, owner of 37 starts over a 52-game career that has seen him register 292 tackles.

Looking to meet the challenge of Samford's high-octane passing game is a Furman secondary that counts 107 starts among its four regulars.  The leaders include All-SoCon cornerback Travis Blackshear, who counts a program high 45 starts along with 11 interceptions in his career, and All-SoCon free safety Hugh Ryan (217 tackles, 8 INTs in his tenure), who is in line to register play in his 50th game as a Paladin on Saturday.

In addition to being a ESPN+ live streamed event, Saturday's contest will be aired over flagship The Fan Upstate and its four powerhouse stations: 97.7 FM/1330 AM in Greenville, and 97.1 FM/950 AM in Spartanburg.  Broadcasts can be secured via Audacy.com, as well as through FurmanPaladins.com.
