Greenville, S.C. – Three Paladins finished with double-doubles on Friday evening as the Furman volleyball team ended a four-match home swing with a 3-1 (20-25, 25-15, 25-22, 25-14) win over the Western Carolina Catamounts in Southern Conference action at Alley Gym.
Furman, who has now won three matches in a row, improves to 15-6 overall and 6-4 in the SoCon. Western Carolina drops to 6-14 on the year and 3-6 in conference play.
Lauren Haynes,
Mary Beth Headley, and
Emily Navarro all compiled double-doubles to pace the Paladins. Haynes and Headley both registered their fifth double-doubles of the year while Navarro added her third. Headley led all players with a match high 14 kills to go with 13 digs. Haynes contributed 11 kills and 17 digs. Navarro set two new career highs with 40 assists and 20 digs.
Izzy Castelloe tallied a career high 11 kills. Defensively,
Kennedy Seekford totaled a match high 22 digs.
Ali Morris, Bailey Hartsough, and Sarah Janourova all finished with double-doubles for the Catamounts. Morris recorded 11 kills and 13 digs while Hartsough had 11 kills and 20 digs. Janourova posted 28 assists and 20 digs. Livi Weidmann had 10 kills.
Furman hit just .071 in the first set as Western Carolina got five kills from Hartsough and three apiece from Weidmann and Logan Carr for the 25-20 win. Following a Paladin timeout, the Catamounts extended their lead to 20-16 before Furman cut its deficit to 21-19 on
Lindsay Walch's kill. Western Carolina finished on a 4-1 run for the five-point victory.
The Paladin offense responded in the second set by hitting .303 and limiting the Catamounts to a -.029 clip. Furman scored 15 of the first 21 points in the frame, highlighted by a 9-4 run to start, and led 15-6 midway when Headley connected on a kill. Haynes would give the Paladins their largest lead at 23-11 late after registering a kill. Western Carolina answered with four straight points before Furman captured the final two for a 25-15 victory.
The third set featured a total of 13 ties and five lead changes with Haynes and Headley combining for nine of the Paladins' 17 kills. The Catamounts built an early 8-4 lead before Furman responded with an 8-3 run to go ahead 12-11 off a kill by Castelloe. The score would be tied eight times over the next 21 points until Haynes put the Paladins in front 23-22 with her kill. Headley followed with a kill and Haynes wrapped up the set with a service ace to give Furman the 25-22 triumph.
The Paladins never trailed throughout the fourth set and began on a 7-1 run, leading to a Western Carolina timeout. Furman's defense kept the Catamounts under .100 hitting during the frame as the visitors finished at .029. Headley gave the Paladins a 15-5 advantage with her kill and Navarro made it 20-10 in the later stages after picking up a kill. Furman recorded the final three points of the set, including two kills from Headley, to secure the 25-14 win and 3-1 match victory.
The Paladins concluded the match hitting .221 overall led by Castelloe's .474 clip. Furman also held a 55-43 advantage in kills, 48-39 in assists, and 82-80 in digs.
The Paladins travel to Samford on Thursday, October 26 for an 8 p.m. EST first serve against the Bulldogs.
