Furman Rallies To Top UNC Asheville, 4-2

Paladins Travel To Wofford On Saturday For Regular Season Finale

Asheville, N.C. – Furman scored a season-high four goals and rallied from an early 1-0 deficit to top UNC Asheville in non-conference men's soccer action on Tuesday night at Greenwood Field in Asheville, N.C.

With the victory, Furman improved to 8-4-3 on the season while the Bulldogs slipped to 7-5-2. The win upped Furman's record to 20-0-3 all-time versus UNC Asheville.

The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the 11th minute when Sam Pitts-Eckersall and Myles Edmondson combined to set up Stewart Patnaud for a tap-in off a low cross from the left side of the box. Asheville continued to press the Paladins in the opening half hour and nearly doubled the lead on a similar low cross, but the Bulldogs' chance from close range flashed wide of the right post.

Furman leveled the match in the 43rd minute on senior Charlie Boone's first career goal. Lloyd Wamu Snell unleashed a shot from the middle of the box that was deflected by the goalkeeper towards the right post. Boone nodded his header inside the post at 42:30 to even the contest at 1-1.

The Paladins controlled the majority of the chances in the second half and grabbed the lead near the hour mark. Goalkeeper Cameron Maung-Maung triggered the attacked with a pass up the middle of the field to Dylan Lane who slid a pass into the path of Wamu Snell. He took a couple of touches before lining a shot into the left-hand corner to put the Paladins on top 2-1.

Furman's defensive pressure paid off less than 10 minutes later when Lane, who notched his second assist of the night, stole the ball in the midfielder and created a two-versus-one situation with the keeper before setting up Christian Kraus for a driven shot into the left-hand corner. Tommy Redhead scored Furman's fourth consecutive goal a few minutes later by dribbling through the midfield and slotting his shot inside the right corner from near the top of the box.

UNC Asheville got a late consolation goal from Aidan Whitlock off a free kick in the final minutes for the final 4-2 scoreline.

Maung-Maung, who enter the match at halftime, registered one save and picked up the victory for the Paladins. Ian McGill stopped eight shots for the Bulldogs.

The Paladins outshot Asheville 17-14, including a 12-5 margin in shots on goal.

Furman finishes the regular season on Saturday when it travels to Snyder Field in Spartanburg, S.C., for a 7 p.m. clash versus Southern Conference rival Wofford.
