Greenville, S.C. – Mary Emily Morgan and Bri Mahoney both had 14 kills to lead the Wofford Terriers to a 3-2 (25-20, 24-26, 25-17, 23-25, 10-15) victory over the Furman volleyball team in Southern Conference action, Saturday evening inside Alley Gym.
Furman drops to 16-7 overall and 7-5 in the SoCon. Wofford improves to 16-7 on the season and 7-5 in conference play.
Lauren Haynes tied her career high of 21 kills on .232 hitting to lead all players. A total of three players had double-digit kills as
Lindsay Walch contributed a career best 15 on .429 hitting and
Mary Beth Headley added 10.
Emily Navarro matched her career high of 45 assists and fell one dig shy of a double-double after totaling nine.
Kennedy Seekford had a match high 26 digs.
Mahoney finished with a double-double for the Terriers on 14 kills, along with Morgan, and 13 digs. Natalie Arnold provided 11 kills while Taylor Pecht and Emily Hodsdon combined for 52 assists. Hodsdon tallied a double-double with 12 digs. Laney Klika led the team with 25 digs.
The Paladins compiled a .256 hitting percentage in the first set, led by Haynes' six kills, to win 25-20. Furman led by as many as eight points midway, 17-9, before Wofford answered with a 10-4 run to trail 21-19. After seeing its lead trimmed to 22-20, the Paladins scored the final three points for the five-point triumph capped by a combination block from Walch and
Grainne McGrath.
Following the Terriers' 26-24 victory in the second set, Furman responded by hitting .310 in the third and claimed a 25-17 win. Headley, Haynes, and Walch combined for 10 of the Paladins' 12 kills in the frame. The teams split the first 18 points before Furman reeled off a 13-4 run to break the set open, taking a 22-13 lead when Headley recorded a kill. Wofford cut the lead to 23-17, but a kill by Navarro and Terrier attack error gave the Paladins the 25-17 win.
The Terriers followed by winning the fourth and fifth sets by scores of 25-23 and 15-10 to secure the 3-2 match victory.
Furman concluded the match hitting .210 while holding a 65-58 advantage in kills, 62-56 in assists, and 75-74 in digs. The Paladins also registered nine total blocks.
Furman plays its final home matches of the season next weekend, November 3-4, hosting Mercer and Chattanooga.
