Greenville, S.C. – Furman hit .344 on Friday evening as the Paladins completed a season sweep of the UNC Greensboro Spartans with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-17) victory in Southern Conference play from Fleming Gymnasium.
Furman, who snapped its three-match losing streak, improves to 17-9 on the year and 8-7 against conference opponents. With the loss, UNC Greensboro drops to 1-25 overall and 0-15 in the SoCon.
The Paladins' .344 hitting percentage is their second-highest clip turned in this season behind only .352, which was compiled in a 3-0 win over East Tennessee State on October 19.
Lauren Haynes led all players with a match high 10 kills for Furman on .435 hitting while adding six digs.
Grainne McGrath and
Lindsay Walch both hit over .400 and finished with nine kills. Making her first start of the season,
Genevieve Perry contributed nine kills.
Emily Navarro dished out 35 assists to go with seven digs. Defensively,
Kennedy Seekford had a team best nine digs.
America Anderson (8) and Aylin Baran (7) combined for 15 kills to lead the Spartans offensively. Mallory Meers totaled 11 assists and Izora Gragg nine. Avery Sziksai had a match high 14 digs.
Furman committed just two attack errors in the first set while compiling 17 kills and a .500 hitting clip. The teams traded the first 10 points of the frame before the Paladins used a 7-3 run to go in front 12-8 on a UNCG attack error. The Spartans came back to even the score at 15-15, but Furman answered by closing out the set on an 8-2 run. UNC Greensboro got as close as four, 21-17, before the Paladins scored the last four capped by three straight kills from Haynes and Walch.
McGrath, Perry, and Walch all recorded four kills in the second set with Furman posting another solid offensive performance, hitting .345 with 13 kills on three attack errors. The Paladins trailed 12-8 early but rebounded with a 13-1 run, including a stretch of seven consecutive points, to take a 21-13 lead capped by Walch's kill. Furman concluded the set by scoring the last three points for the 25-17 win with Haynes securing the set following her service ace.
The Paladins limited UNCG to just .100 hitting in the third set with McGrath recording four kills, and Perry and Haynes providing three each. UNC Greensboro opened by scoring seven of the first 10 points and took a four-point lead off a Furman attack error. The Paladins came back with a 14-6 run of their own to hold a 17-13 advantage when Haynes connected on a kill. Furman maintained its four-point lead in the later stages before ending with five straight points to clinch to set 25-17 on a UNCG attack error.
The Spartans managed to hit just .146 for the match, marking the 14
th time this season the Paladins have kept an opponent under .200 hitting. Furman held a 43-25 advantage in kills, 40-21 in assists, and 8-3 in blocks.
The Paladins travel to The Citadel on Saturday evening for their final match of the regular season. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
