Sydney Ryan scored a career high 28 points to power Furman past Southern Wesleyan in women's basketball action Monday evening at Timmons Arena.
Ryan, a sophomore from wing from Nashville, Tenn., connected on 10-of-16 shots, including 4-of-8 3-pointers, and 4-of-5 free throws for her 28 points, which topped her previous high of 25 set last year in a win over Erskine. Â She also claimed seven rebounds, three steals, and an assist for the Paladins (3-2).
Senior guard
Evie DePetro also went for a new career high with 18 points, while
Kate Johnson tallied 15 points and
Jada Session 13 to round out Furman's double figure scoring parade.
Lexi Greffen paced Southern Wesleyan with 15 points.
The Paladins used their size to dominate inside, out-redbounding the Warriors 64-29, which led to a 28-6 edge in second chance points.
Session notched her first double-double of the season with a game high 10 rebounds, and Johnson followed with nine caroms, along with
Sydney James.
Furman led 26-12 after one period and took total command in the second, outscoring Southern Wesleyan 29-15 to take a 55-27 halftime lead behind Ryan, who tallied 18 of her 28 points over the game's first 20 minutes.
The Paladins shot 51.2 percent (21x41) from the field in the first half and finished the contest at 44.3 percent (35x79).
Furman plays its next two games in San Juan, Puerto Rico, taking on Appalachian State on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. ET and Binghamton on Saturday, also at 1:30.
