Princeton, N.J. – Matt Allocco hit a go-ahead three-pointer with 4.2 seconds remaining to lift Princeton to a 70-69 victory over Furman in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon at Jadwin Gymnasium.
Princeton erased an 11-point deficit to snatch the victory and improve to 8-0 on the season. The loss dropped the Paladins to 4-4.
After Furman turned the ball over with 34 seconds to play, the Tigers followed three consecutive missed shots with offensive rebounds before Allocco drained the game-winning triple from the left wing.
Furman led by as many as 11 points and held a 67-58 advantage following a pair of
PJay Smith Jr. free throws with 3:18 left. The Paladins turned the ball over on each of its next four possessions, and Princeton's Caden Pierce knotted the game at 67-67 with a three-pointer at the 1:38 mark.
JP Pegues restored the Paladin lead with a driving layup, but Furman committed turnovers on its final two possessions allowing Allocco to win the game for Princeton in the final five seconds.
Xavian Lee led Princeton with 24 points while Pierce finished with 22 points and 15 rebounds. Allocco totaled 13 points to give the Tigers three players in double figures.
Furman took a 28-27 lead into halftime and shot 50% from the floor in the second half to build a 65-54 advantage on
Ben VanderWal's free throw with 4:10 to go. The Paladins held Princeton to 35.8% shooting, including 4-for-31 behind the arc, but the Tigers tallied 28 points off 19 Furman turnovers.
Garrett Hien led the Paladins with 16 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Pegues totaled 14 points and five assists while
Alex Williams totaled 13. Furman shot 49% from the field and held a 38-33 edge on the glass but connected on just 11-of-19 trips to the line.
The Paladins are back in action on Monday night when they travel to Fayetteville, Ark., to face the Arkansas Razorbacks. Tip-off at Bud Walton Arena is set for 8 p.m. EST and the game will be streamed live on SEC Network+.
