Greenville, S.C. – The Furman men's tennis team collected its fourth home win of the season Sunday afternoon when it defeated the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles, 4-3, in non-conference action at Mickel Tennis Center.
Furman improves to 4-5 overall while Tennessee Tech falls to 0-7 on the season.
The Paladins swept all three doubles matches to take the early 1-0 lead over the Golden Eagles. Furman picked up one win to start when
Connor Laymon and
Chad Nash won their No. 3 match by forfeit.
Cole Burnam and
Thomas Kennedy, playing at No. 1, and
Jerry Barton and
Elijah Poritzky, playing at No. 2, completed the sweep by winning their matches. Barton and Poritzky secured the point with their 6-3 triumph over Evzen Holis and Paulo Ramos Martin. Burnam and Kennedy followed with a 7-5 win against Mika Berghaus and Elias Grubert.
The Paladins extended their lead to 3-0 to begin singles play when Laymon (No. 5) and
John Rado (No. 6) recorded wins by forfeit. Burnam would quickly clinch the match for Furman at the No. 4 position after knocking off Ramos Martin in straight sets 6-3, 6-0.
Tennessee Tech closed out the match winning at No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3 to put the final score at 4-3.
The Paladins wrap up their homestand next Saturday, February 25 hosting Georgia Southern at 1 p.m.
